Video of the Week: STILL FLYIN' - Good Thing It's A Ghost Town Around Here
One of the more endearing traits of MTV2’s criminally axed show 120 Minutes was its occasional habit of repeatedly airing a particular video while puckishly refusing to tell you what it was. For the regular viewer this could become infuriating, in a good way: it’s this again! What the FUCK is it?
This was the last of those before shutdown. On paper, there is nothing about it I don’t hate. The band is what Time Out would probably call a “loose collective” of San Franciscan hippies. And they’re called Still Flyin’, for the love of God. I even hate their correctly deployed apostrophe. Their dance routines – I hate dance routines – and their “look” for this video are straight out of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And there is nothing, nothing in the entire sorry history of this planet, I hate more than The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
But I love Good Thing It’s A Ghost Town Around Here (the song more than the video). At first I’d thought it might be Architecture In Helsinki becaue the second half is dominated by one of those girly singalong codas the latter specialise in, but those vowels are as American as extraordinary rendition and Allen Ginsberg. A brief search (I love the internet, too. It’s so easy to forget how recent a miracle this thing is) led me to these people. Whose myspace proudly proclaims their proclivity for “jamming”. Excuse me while I shoot myself seven times in the face. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Still Flyin’.
