This is much better than the version on the 7” that came with Spoonfed Hybrid. Reason: for the latter we dropped the key by a semitone to avoid me having to “strain” to hit some notes in the vocal. Moral: “Listen to Your Heart”. Theory: the Western ear is so accustomed to hearing music in one of the more popular of the finite number of keys available to users of the twelve-tone scale that a piece in (let’s say) D# as opposed to D or E will subconsciously sound “wrong” even to the listener who thinks that a key is something you put in a door. There is almost certainly an abundance of empirical evidence to debunk Theory: it will turn out that Yesterday is in fact in D#.

P1, along with P2 (which later appeared on AC Temple's final album Belinda Backwards) and P3 (on a “free” 7" with Spoonfed Hybrid) were some of the first things I did after Duncan introduced me to sequencing on his user-nightmarish Pro-24 set-up. I've always loved making noises with a piano. But I can't get both hands to behave at once. So I thought I'd use the machine to cheat. The result is still utterly ham-fisted. I kind of like that, though: the fact that I’ve done things a proper pianist would never countenance combined with the rigid metronomy of the sequencer lends these pieces a distinct flavour of piano roll music.
