Unreleased Recordings: SILLY ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTALS

One reason for pop music’s continued (and continuing, despite the idiotic proclamations of those who insist against all evidence that every idea has already been had) supremacy as the most powerful and accessible art form ever invented is its close relationship with technology. Since Les Paul first strapped a trilobite to an old hickory tree, or whatever he did, an ever-accelerating stream of new machines has been invented for both recording and performing. New machines, with help from their operators, invent new music. Meanwhile, new music can be invented using old machines. Or limitless combinations of new and old machines. I’m not so concerned for the health of pop music.
This… ah, piece… represents one such advance, a twining of man and machine, a cybernetic orgy of techno-detritus. Duncan had given me this… ah, setup… comprising a beige thing that was more QWERTY keyboard with built-in computer than the other way around, a 1970s cassette recorder and a musical keyboard for telling the beige thing what notes you wanted. At the start of each session, you had to play the tape into the computer in order to remind the latter of the purpose of its existence. This turned out to be replicating the sounds of Yamaha’s deservedly short-lived (but briefly fashionable) “DX” range of FM synthesizers. The setup was of little or no practical use, so I used it to make this one-finger unterprog nightmare. The guitars and drum machines are all Duncan. I can only apologise for the rest of it. But I used every fucking preset in that ridiculous machine. - B15 download
